Data mapping

is used when linking two or more distinctive databases, programs or models with each other. Data mapping is used in various situations:

  • when integrating one database into another
  • when transferring data from on source to another destination

One Example

for data mapping in Software engineering is the integration of a new device into an existing software platform. As a first step, a mapping of the network software platform is used to understand it's functionality & structure. Afterwards the two maps are being put together to find a combined solution. It describes the best way of accessing and representing some form of information.
